A few months ago, we were contacted by a former teacher, who told us that, when working at Broadlands School in the 1980s, a pupil had presented her with half an encaustic floor tile. Her father had framed the tile for her and she had kept it for many years, but was now anxious to return it to Keynsham Abbey.
We made arrangements to meet and spent a very interesting morning together. We came away with the half tile, which appears to be part of a design made up of four tiles to create a floral cross and which dates from the third quarter of the 13th century.
Are there other artefacts lying in attics or garden sheds and which came from Keynsham Abbey? If you know of any, do let us know. We’d love to see them.
